Finding Your Alignment. In Yoga. In Life.

My Passion for Yoga

My Speciality

Hi I'm Whitney and I am a yoga teacher who specializes in prenatal, postnatal, and pelvic floor yoga. I love yoga because of how good it feels to move my body into the different shapes. These are simple shapes that I'm referring to and not the acrobatic ones that people sometimes associate with yoga. As yoga instructor Bryan Kest would say, "this pose is called bend over and touch your toes." It's fine if that pose is also called Uttanasana, but it's more about what that pose does for your health.

I knew nothing about pregnancy, except from the movies and watching The Business of Being Born. I was even frightened of the whole pregnancy, labor, and delivery process. I was already a certified yoga instructor so when an opportunity arose to take a prenatal training, I immediately enrolled and not only am I grateful for the knowledge, but I love sharing it. As body mechanics and awareness in yoga are my passions, I took a specialized training on yoga for pelvic floor problems to better serve myself and you - man or woman. I have since immersed myself in the specialties of prenatal, postnatal, and pelvic floor yoga. While pregnant and postpartum, I found my expertise invaluable and I hope to share that with you.

My View of Yoga

I specialize in working with women going through pregnancy, birth, menopause, and all biological phases your lives. I also work with anyone who suffers with pelvic floor issues.  I work people who are starting out on their journey and I work with those of you who have taken many steps on your path.

I specifically want women to know that there is help for any pelvic pain or discomfort you feel whether caused by injury, pregnancy, childbirth, or surgery. This applies to men too who have had injuries or surgery! I am here for you to discuss these concerns with me and feel empowered with a path forward.

Finding Your Alignment & Working Together

Finding Alignment. Offering Alignment. Life is full of responsibility and constantly being pulled in different directions. What's important amidst such hustle? Our health - our physical and mental well-being. It's about finding alignment. I work with you to find it in your yoga practice.

Alignment is the harmony of your body, your mind, and your breath.
It’s the basic principle underlying all I teach. And it’s yours for the taking. In yoga circles there is a saying, “How we react on the mat enlightens us to how react off the mat.” Yoga is about getting in touch with your body, tuning in to yourself through the pose, and allowing yourself to be present through deep breathing.

I honor the student and the student's yoga experience. One of my favorite mantra's (that I learned and repeat from Bryan Kest) is that my yoga class is like a Yoga Buffet. It is up to you - the student - to choose how to apply the poses to your body and choose what is right for your day, energy level, and injuries. We work together to find your appropriate mix of strengthening, stretching, and balancing movements.

Yoga is also about strength and softness, stamina and flexibility, stretching and mindfulness – and especially the breath. While my focus is on alignment for a safe, balanced yoga practice for years to come, yoga is also supposed to be fun, playful, helpful, invigorating, meditative, and balancing.  We can't take yoga too seriously.

Yoga is
a whole body approach to aligning yourself and your life. It’s a tool to make you feel energized, relaxed, and grounded. It’s an antidote to the hustle and bustle your demanding day. It’s a way to balance the conflicting tensions of your busy schedule while learning more about your body and yourself. Most importantly, you as a yoga practitioner learn how to moderate and adjust your practice to suit your needs.

"Either the goal of yoga is to be free, or the goal of yoga is to get it right.  You can't really have it both ways. Because if you choose freedom, you have to divest yourself of that crazy idea that you have to get it right." LESLIE KAMINOFF
